How tight should rugby shorts be?

i just got some rugby shorts from the team i play on and i usually am a large (34-36 waist it says on the size chart for ccc) but i got medium (32-34). now i had tried them on before just trading them in and though maybe id give em a try, there is about an inch or 2 of room between my leg and the shorts and they fit waist wise pretty well. also i am out of shape a little and plan on getting a little thinner. i play flank and am 5'8" 195, if that matters. and i still can move well i was just wondering if i should go back up to a large. what do you think.
